April 26th - Science Inquiry projects due (evolution/natural selection)
Sélection naturelle (natural selection): processus naturel par lequel les traits mieux adaptés à leur environnement confèrent un avantage en matière de reproduction; la variation génétique agissant graduellement sur une population est à la base de ce processus (the natural process by which certain traits that are better adapted to their environment lead to a reproductive advantage; this process happens over time because of genetic variation)
Le registre fossile témoigne des changements dans la biodiversité au cours des temps géologiques (the fossil record provides evidence for changes in biodiversity over geological time)
How do we know that evolution is really happening?
"Evolution is one of the greatest theories in all of science. It sets out to explain life: specifically, how the first simple life gave rise to all the huge diversity we see today, from bacteria to oak trees to blue whales. For scientists, evolution is a fact. We know that life evolved with the same certainty that we know the Earth is roughly spherical, that gravity keeps us on it, and that wasps at a picnic are annoying."

There is evidence of evolution on our bodies:
Explore your Inner Fish!
Dive inside the human body with this interactive experience from Your Inner Fish, and discover how our bodies hold the clues to the history of human evolution. Explore how the biology of our eyes, hands, brains and more have each evolved to make us uniquely human, while at the same time unveiling the astonishing similarities that we still hold with the rest of the animal kingdom.

Birds of Paradise Project
The birds-of-paradise are a family of birds that live only in New Guinea, a few surrounding islands, and a small part of adjacent Australia. The 39 species in the family are renowned for the brilliant colors and complex displays of the males—the result of sexual selection by females. Over the course of about 20 million years, these astounding animals evolved from a single ancestor that resembled a crow.

Natural selection in action - Play the Peppered Moth Game
With the Peppered Moths simulation, you take on the role of the hunter and learn at least one reason why you might eat one moth instead of another. As you select certain moths, you can change how many dark or light moths there are in the population.
